Lewis Cohen

Sculpture and drawing spanning more than six decades.

About the Artist

Lewis Cohen is an American sculptor whose work spans more than sixty years. Working across drawing printmaking and sculpture, his practice focuses on the human figure as a way of exploring structure, presence, and experience.

Rather than following a single style or period, his work has evolved through continuous experimentation—returning to certain ideas over time while approaching them in new ways.

Practice

Cohen’s process begins with drawing. These works are not simply studies, but a way of developing and testing form. Through repeated revisions—folding, reworking, and altering the image—new structures emerge.

Sculpture builds on this process. Instead of reproducing what is observed, Cohen uses the figure to create forms that feel resolved in themselves. The goal is not likeness, but presence.

Rather than following a single style or period, his work has evolved through continuous experimentation—returning to certain ideas over time while approaching them in new ways.
